Michael R. Carlson, Architect

Michael is the founder and Principal Architect of M R Carlson Inc.

M R Carlson Inc. is the logical next-generation design and consulting firm for Michael, set in the Pacific NW and Midwest. Michael brings his 40+ years of experience and award winning sustainable design skills to the founding of M R Carlson Inc.

Michael began his career in 1979, designing single family homes, additions and renovations, while still in high school. Seeing his design work become reality in over 30 built homes inspired his quest to become a licensed architect. Michael began practicing architecture 1986, and founded his first architecture firm, Carlson Studio Architecture (CSA) in 1997 in Florida, where he served as President and Director of Sustainability in the organization until 2018. In 2016 Michael opened Carlson Studio Architecture, Seattle, WA and in 2022 began this next generation practice, M R Carlson Inc. He is responsible for all operational and architectural matters of the firm. He will be directly involved in your project.

His interest and study of sustainable design principles began in the early ‘80s as an architecture student at Ball State’s College of Architecture & Planning and the Center for Energy Research/Education/Service.

Michael focuses on high performance design, and has since 2000, when LEED V 2.0 was first released. He has a broad base of experience, from government and educational facilities to residential design, office buildings, non-profit organizations, restaurants, interior tenant build outs, churches and healthcare facilities.

Michael combines his diverse project experience with an ongoing dedication to quality in the built environment through sustainable design and building practices.
